Azerbaijan e-Visa for Indian Citizens: $29, Three Days, and the Domain You Must Get Right

Azerbaijan runs one of the least painful e-visas available to an Indian passport. The whole thing is a web form: no embassy appointment, no biometrics, no courier, no physical documents. You pay by card, you wait three working days, and a single-page PDF arrives by email. Baku is a four-hour flight from Delhi and the state fee is twenty dollars.

Which is why the interesting part of this article is not how to qualify. Indian nationals are eligible and the process rarely fails on its merits. What goes wrong goes wrong in three specific places: a fee that is not refunded when an application fails on a typo, a passport-validity rule written the opposite way round from every other country’s, and the website people apply on.

The fee is $29, and the government only calls $20 of it a fee

The portal is precise about this in a way that trips up anyone budgeting from a headline number. The e-visa fee is USD 20, described as a charge for reviewing the application and non-refundable under any circumstances. A further USD 9 is charged as a service fee for processing the application, payable in addition to the state fee. Twenty-nine dollars leaves your card, and the twenty is gone whether or not you are approved.

That distinction matters more than it looks. A refusal is not a refund, and a refusal caused by a misspelt name or a bad passport scan costs the same as a refusal on substance. Read the form back to yourself before you pay — surname order, passport number, date format — because the cheapest fix is the one you make before the payment screen.

Two processing speeds exist. Standard is three working days. Urgent is three hours, and the portal is emphatic that the three hours run regardless of holidays and non-working days, which makes it genuinely useful for a last-minute trip. The urgent fee is not published on the portal’s information page; commercial guides quote around USD 60, and we could not confirm that from a primary source. The checkout screen shows the real number before you commit, so read it there rather than trusting anyone’s table, including ours.

The passport rule is written backwards from the one you are used to

Almost every country expresses passport validity relative to your travel: six months beyond your date of entry, or beyond your date of departure. Azerbaijan expresses it relative to the visa. The portal requires that your passport expire at least three months after the e-visa expires.

Work that through. The e-visa gives you a 90-day window in which to enter, and a 30-day stay after admission. So the outer edge of the authorisation can sit four months from the day it is issued, and your passport needs three months of life beyond that — which can mean seven months of validity from the day you apply, even for a one-week holiday in Baku. A passport with five months left is comfortably fine for most of Asia and can still fail here.

If your passport is inside its final year, check this before you pay the non-refundable twenty dollars, and renew first if it is close. This is the single most common avoidable refusal on an otherwise clean application.

Check the domain character by character

The Azerbaijani government’s portal is at evisa.gov.az. Azerbaijani state bodies sit under .gov.az, and the official information page we have sourced this article from is on that domain.

There is also a site at evisa.govt.az — an extra letter — which serves pages for individual nationalities, including India, with the word "official" inside its URL path. We are not going to characterise who runs it or what they charge. We are going to point out that one character separates the two addresses, that a search engine will happily rank both, and that you should type the address yourself rather than clicking the first result. If a site quotes a total that is not twenty-nine dollars for standard processing, you are not on the government’s portal.

Getting in, and getting more time

There is no visa on arrival for an ordinary Indian passport. The e-visa or a sticker visa from the Embassy has to exist before you reach the airport in India, because the airline checks at the departure gate and denies boarding without it. Print the A4 PDF — the portal issues it in that format, built to the ICAO document standard — and carry it, along with your return ticket, hotel booking and evidence of funds. A valid e-visa is permission to present yourself at the border, not a guarantee of admission, and border officers do ask for the supporting documents.

Extending is close to impossible for a tourist. Reporting on the State Migration Service’s practice describes extensions being granted only on narrow grounds — urgent medical treatment, serious illness of a close relative — rather than because you are enjoying yourself. For a longer stay, use the embassy route from the start, where multi-entry and longer-validity categories exist. Thirty days is otherwise thirty days.

The short version

For twenty-nine dollars and three days, Baku is one of the cheapest new stamps an Indian passport can collect. Just make sure the twenty-nine dollars goes to the government, and that your passport has more life left in it than the trip appears to need.
